As global markets reach their pandemic lows, Clisto Holdings significantly increases its position in Apple Inc., viewing the sell-off as a temporary dislocation in a business whose structural competitive advantages are strengthening, not weakening.
Clisto Holdings advises that the group has materially increased its equity position in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) during the March 2020 market sell-off, which saw the company's share price decline more than 30% from its February peak as global investors liquidated positions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group views this as an exceptional opportunity to deepen a long-standing position in what it regards as the world's most durable consumer technology franchise.
Apple's competitive moat is not a product — it is a closed ecosystem of hardware, software, and services that creates switching costs so profound they function almost as permanent customer retention. The iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods are not standalone devices. They are nodes in a network, each one making the others more valuable.
The Services business — comprising the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud, Apple Pay, and Apple Care — is the group's highest-conviction long-term driver. It is growing at 20%+ annually, requires no additional hardware investment, and carries operating margins that dwarf the physical product lines.
While the group acknowledges near-term demand disruption from global store closures and supply chain pressure, it views Apple's cash position (over $200bn in net cash), buyback programme, and recurring Services revenue as structural shock absorbers that most companies lack.
Apple is not a business in distress. It is a business temporarily priced like one.
With 5G upgrade cycles beginning, wearables growing rapidly, and Services revenue compounding, Clisto Holdings believes Apple's earnings power over the next five years is materially underestimated by the market. The group intends to hold and compound.
